Should we stop expecting?

‘An ode to low expectations’ piqued my interest in The Atlantic.

I think I’m a pretty positive person, especially during difficult times. This ability to see hope and to focus on the positives whilst handling the negatives has helped me through the endless chasm of the various Lockdowns for Covid.

However, when it comes to something potentially good happening…I automatically lower my expectations, protect myself. I did this acutely when I went through IVF. I possibly went too far that way. It was a slog, physically and mentally…and I knew the odds at my age and in my situation were slim. It did work (after 3 rounds) and I was stunned. That taught me to keep expectations low, but don’t fall into despair.

So…whilst James Parker’s advice seems a little bleak… I agree with it on the whole. Life is really bloody hard sometimes and it’s good to remind ourselves to see the beauty not just in big achievements or in how someone else treats us…but in ourselves and in little things around us.

Strive for excellence, by all means. My God, please strive for excellence. Excellence alone will haul us out of the hogwash.

But lower the bar, and keep it low, when it comes to your personal attachment to the world. Gratification? Satisfaction? Having your needs met? Fool’s gold.

If you can get a buzz of animal cheer from the rubbishy sandwich you’re eating, the daft movie you’re watching, the highly difficult person you’re talking to, you’re in business.

And when trouble comes, you’ll be fitter for it.
